What do low cell counts mean?

The expression "low cell count, high milk quality" refers to the health quality of the milk, particularly with regard to udder health and hygiene in dairy farming.

🧬 Low cell counts

  • Refers to the somatic cell count (SCC) in the milk.
  • Somatic cells are primarily defense cells (leukocytes) and epithelial cells.
  • Ein niedriger Zellgehalt (<100.000 Zellen/ml) weist auf ein gesundes Euter hin.
  • An increase in the cell count indicates a possible udder inflammation (mastitis).

🥛 High milk quality

Refers to:

  • Low bacteriological load
  • High protein and fat content
  • Good taste and shelf life
  • Suitable for processing (e.g. cheese production)
  • A low cell count is a key criterion for high-quality milk.

Why is this important?

  • For farmers: higher milk prices with quality supplements, healthy animals, reduced use of antibiotics.
  • For dairies: Better processability, higher product yield.
  • For consumers: High-quality, safe products with a good nutritional profile.
